Attention all Ohio voters: A very important issue is on the upcoming ballot this fall. Issue 2 will creating a Livestock care standards board. This board will consist of livestock experts and will be responsible for setting care standards for livestock in Ohio. This benefits Ohio farmers because the livestock experts on this board know the importance of livestock care and how the agricultural industry works. This will help prevent malicious organizations such as PETA and HSUS (The Humane Society of the United States-this is a completely different organization than your local non-profit shelters!) from creating their own livestock care standards. PETA and HSUS are not livestock experts and are not aware of the care that these animals need. They have ulterior motives which include trying to convert the United States to vegetarianism and earning profit! PETA, a so-called animal-rights group killed 95% of animals in its care in 2008 (read my earlier blog for more)! They really do not have animals rights in their best interest. They just use it as a cover for their profit reaping business with animal lives at the mercy of their tyranny! Anyone who knows a local farmer knows that we take great pride in raising our animals and ensure that they receive proper care. For many of us, raising livestock is a means of earning a living and we depend on these animals for our livelihood. We must take excellent care of them or we starve. Anyone who says we mistreat them doesn't know the real story! And to clear up myths about the factory farm...they just don't exist like these organizations would like you to believe. In fact, most livestock are raised on small to medium sized family farms. I urge you to read more about Issue 2 before election day and...

Mourning the Loss of a Pet

My Mother-in-law sent me this email. It is very comforting if you have lost a pet. I hope you enjoy it:

This is one of the kindest things you may ever see..It is not known who replied, but there is a beautiful soul working in the dead letter office of the US postal service.

Our 14 year old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she died, my 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey.. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so she dictated these words:

Dear God,Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her You will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.
Love, Meredith

We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office.

A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.

Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, 'To Meredith' in an unfamiliar hand.

Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, 'When a Pet Dies..' Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey &Meredith and this note:

Dear Meredith,

Abbey arrived safely in heaven.Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away.Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by..Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you.I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much.By the way, I'm easy to find, I am wherever there is love.

Velveeta Shells & Cheese Review

As a member of the Kraft First Taste community, I received a coupon to try the Velveeta Shells & Cheese microwavable cups for free. I absolutely love macaroni and cheese, so I knew I would love this. It was so easy to make and it came with Velveeta's traditional cheese sauce that you squeeze on top of the cooked pasta (not the powdered kind). It only took about 3 minutes to cook the pasta in the microwave (done in the packaging so this saves on dirty dishes). Then, you just squeeze on the sauce, stir, and enjoy. This was very flavorful and so creamy. I had one cup and gave one of my free cups to my hubby. He really like it too. This was a good choice for him, because he isn't a fan of the powdered cheese kind because it can be "gritty." This would be an excellent choice for children's lunches as it is the perfect size for them, or it would be great to take to work for a quick meal. I highly suggest you try it! My friend Jenn sent me this email and it just touched my heart. We could all learn something from our four-legged companions. I have been blessed with some very special canines in my life. One of the most memorable is my beloved Champ, who passed away from cancer this past January. I still can feel the pain from this loss. He was a faithful companion that I found along side the road. He was a faithful protector and loving companion. He was always happy to see me and willing to give love, even when he wasn't feeling well. Rest in Peace Champ- I miss you!

A Dog's Purpose? (from a 6-year-old).Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker 's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Oh my, it seems like an eternity since I've made a post. Things have been a little overwhelming here on the Johnson farm. But, hopefully we are over the rough spot and things will return to normal. I will try to post as often as possible, but I am preparing for the next busy chapter in my life. It seems that life never slows down for Luke and I. God always seems to put forth a new challenge for us. Maybe if we listened closer, we wouldn't have such a difficulty seeing what His plans are for us. So my newest adventure finds me going back to Ohio State University to complete my pre-requisites for Vet School. This will complete my Bachelors of Science in Agriculture with a minor in Life Sciences. I plan on applying for Vet School within a year or two (once my pre-reqs are finished). I could use all the prayers I can get to get through this!! Wish me luck!!

New Additions to the Johnson Farm

We have recently purchased a two-year old Guernsey cow named Mia. She is providing fresh milk for us to drink as well as to use to make yogurt, cheese, butter and ice cream. I made fresh yogurt and my hubby and I enjoyed some delicious peach yogurt smoothies (made with my own canned peaches). I have also made mozzarella cheese, cheese curds, butter, and ice cream. Everything was delicious. I was particularly excited about the butter. It's sooo good! No more store bought butter for me.

I must give some credit here to my hubby. He made me a portable milking unit so I don't have to milk by hand. God bless him! I tried hand milking the cow one morning, and it's not for me!

Little Oliver (who's not so little any more) and the kitties are enjoying fresh milk as well. Oliver has discovered the source of the white goodness and sits patiently under the cow.

I must not forget to mention four other mouths who are helping to drink the fresh milk. We bought four feeder pigs to fatten up over the summer and have processed in the fall. Fresh bacon...YUMMY!

We also have some new baby kittens! If anyone is interested in a delightful pet or barn cat, please let me know!

Aldi Shopping Trip

I used to not be a big fan of the ALDI grocery store. Recently I've been shopping there and I've really been happy with their store. I am able to buy a lot of groceries for very little. I was a little skeptical about the quality, but I have been pleasantly surprised. They do carry some name brand items in addition to their store brands. Both of which I have been pleased with. Homemade Playdough

I made homemade playdough with my mom when I was little and I thought it was so much fun! This would be a cheap item to add to your kids' Easter baskets or just make it anytime for some rainy day fun. You will need:

1/2 cup salt
1 cup flour
1 tablespoon cream of tartar
1 tablespoon oil
1 cup water
food coloring

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and heat gently. Stir continuously. When desired consistency is reached, remove from stove and allow to cool.

For a more natural playdough, you may use carrot, spinach or beet juices for natural coloring.

Always supervise children when they are playing with playdough. Keep it away from carpet other fabrics. My mom always used to make me sit at the kitchen table to play with it. She didn't like it smashed into her carpet :)

Eat better america has "healthified" many of our favorite recipes so we can still enjoy them without the guilt. There are recipes for chicken quesedillas, spaghetti and meatballs, spinach artichoke dip, and chocolate chip cookies just to name a few. Plus they offer printable coupons for healthy grocery items. Family and Friends- Johnson "Farm" Update

Hello family and friends. Thought I would write a little update about the Johnson “farm” to keep you posted on our happenings. We have just added another addition to our barn. She is a four month old registered Holstein heifer. As some of you may already know, she joins our other four registered Holstein heifers: Beauty, Jody, Rosie, and Diane as well as a freemartin heifer we are raising for beef. We have been purchasing heifers in anticipation of starting our own herd of registered Holsteins. Beauty is due to have her first calf in May and we are very excited. Jody is due with her first calf in September.

Last September I started showing registered Holsteins with my friend Scott of Raygor Farms. To say the least, I became completely addicted to showing, and will be showing my own Holsteins this year as well as helping Scott.

Luke and I have been on the search for a barn to rent so we can start milking someday (out first heifer is due to calve in May-I don’t think we have enough time). This has been a long, stressful process, but we know that one day God will lead us where we are supposed to be. I always have to rely on my faith in God or I would go completely crazy! I know he will lead me.

We have now sold the beef cows (the Holsteins replaced them). Don’t worry! They have gone to a good home! Our friend, Chad Acker has added them to his herd. Rascal has successfully given birth to a heifer and Delilah had a bull calf. We are waiting to hear about Lucy and Daisy. Copper, my horse, was sad to see them go, but is now busy harassing the Holstein heifers. I never will quite understand the attitude of an old mare! She is so sassy!

As some you may have heard, we lost our beloved dog Champ to cancer in January. He was only four years old. We only had him for about a year and a half. I feel our time with him was cut way too short! I found him one day along the road. I watched him almost get hit by a half dozen cars. I knew I had to save him. A lady stopped and helped me catch him. He was our beloved boy from that day on and gave us many fond memories. Later in March, I was at a hay sale and a lady had free puppies. Oh no! Surely I was strong enough to resist the temptation. Not so much! I think I could have resisted, except there was a little puppy with a blind eye. I knew that nobody would want a puppy with a blind eye. I felt as if Champ was nudging me as if to say, “Mom, save him like you did me!” I was completely hooked and now we are madly in love with our little lab-mix named Oliver. The vet thinks he has glaucoma in that eye and will eventually have to have it removed.

PETA is not "FOR" Animals or Farmers

PETA and the Humane Society of the United States (a completely separate entity than your local Humane Societies) have been in cohorts and are on the move to convert the U.S to vegetarianism. They are working against U.S farmers to put them out of business. They advertise false claims that farmers do not take care of their animals and provide cruel housing situations. Any of you that know a half wit about farming know that farmers truly do care about their animals. Yes, there are a few bad eggs out that that can give the rest of us a bad name, but the majority of us really take great care and pride in our animals and provide them with the best housing possible.

The HSUS has claimed dairy farmers are cruel for ripping newborn calves away from their mothers after birth. If they would take 5 seconds to learn why this is done, they would know the whole story. Dairy calves are left with their mothers for a period of time to be cleaned off (licked by the mother). This promotes stimulation of blood flow of the calf and provides a bonding time between mother and calf to reduce stress. The calf is then removed to prevent bacterial/viral contamination of the calf from the calving environment (example: manure that could contain bacteria). This is done because a calf is born with virtually no immunity to disease and if the calf was infected in the calving environment, it would surely die. I think that its better to protect the calf from death than to worry about removing from its mother. Besides, a calf is moved to its own pen filled with clean bedding and is provided with plenty of immunity rich colostrum from its mother.

So before we are accused us of abusing our animals, I wish people would get the real story from the majority and not pigeon-hole us with the minority of those who make bad decisions. Our animals are our livelihood and we depend on them. We would be ignorant not to take proper care of them.

Fresh Laundry and free feed scoops???

Ever wonder how to remove some of those stubborn farm smells from your clothes? I use about a half cup of white vinegar in my wash. It helps your laundry to smell fresh and clean. Vinegar also has great germ killing power! This is a great option for people with skin allergies as an alternative to fabric softeners and dryer sheets(used to make clothes smell fresher).

The empty vinegar bottles are great to recycle for feed scoops around the farm. I just cut (be careful) out the bottom and part of the side (keep the handle at the top and cut part of that side out). These work great and are free! A typical feed scoop costs $4-9 and we are always misplacing them. No need to fret when you lose these! The bottom of the vinegar bottle can be used to feed/water cats or other small animals! Bottles can also be recycled in your community at a designated drop off site.

Tidbits:

*Vinegar can also be used to disinfect hard surfaces like floors and countertops. Just add 1/2 cup vinegar to 1 gallon of water. Don't worry the smell with disappear when it dries.

*For stubborn stains, I use an oxy spray. This is a multi-purpose cleaner that works great on laundry and carpets (follow directions)! I buy the store brand at the Dollar General store and its so cheap!
